Comments: This tree was mis-identified as black ash (Fraxinus nigra) for 10 years (2009-2019). During that time it was erroneously recognized as both state and national champion. Investigation of the tree in 2019 was led by Biological Science Technician for Shenandoah National Park, Dale Meyerhoeffer. He collected a twig sample and photographs that clearly distinguish this tree as white ash (Fraxinus americana). Infestation level of emerald ash borer in this area is heavy. It is unlikely that it will survive because it is not being treated with pesticides.
