Comments:
2022 update: Located within a now 10-year-old pine plantation. Tree has no real dominant leader; its top is flattened out. Has a slight lean and what appear to be 3 timber felling scars (from when previous pine stand was harvested). Trunk circumference measured 4.5 feet above flat ground away from edge of heaving root plate.
2019 update: Declared national champ in 2017, but was dethroned in 2019 by larger tree in South Carolina. The tree appears healthy and sound. It exists because it is a line tree, next to a cut-over. Lightning could be a threat.

Directions: At rear of farm owned by James D. Wright. Adjacent property owned by Walter H. Johnson. No visitors allowed without permission. Best access is by farm road that departs Old Myrtle Road just east of Carrsville Highway overpass. From Old Myrtle Rd, take gravel road parallel to railroad tracks, cross tracks on same road, and enter property. Continue straight and pass between two barns as the road curves left. Continue on until the road runs out into grass near a small barn. (Tree is visible from here directly parallel to the road across a field but may be hidden from view by an oak). Walk straight back to tree line and gate. Follow bushhogged path (take the right path whenever there is a fork) to the south and follow signs to longleaf pine.
