This tree was first discovered and nominated by famed big tree hunter Richard Salzer during the 1970s. At that time, the property was owned by Robert Nelson Ashby, Sr. Perhaps because the tree wasn't among the largest specimens at that time, the tree was not entered into the big tree register. The tree was "rediscovered" by John Zuiker in 2017.
It is clearly an ancient tree based on its character and growth habit. It stands next to an intermittent stream that was dammed long ago to create a farm pond a short distance away. Undoubtedly this stream has quenched the tree's thirst for decades, perhaps centuries.
