2019 Update: An expedition to search for the tree in January 2019 proved difficult in finding the tree. Information about the tree's location was vague. The forest cover is thick with Rhododendron in this area. We assume that the tree was growing within visible distance of the Indian Trail, which circles the lake. We found a large Ilex montana growing next to the trail that had been crushed within the last year or two by a hemlock that had fallen over. We surmised that this may have been the champ because we could find no other Ilex montana in the area of similar size to this one.
