Comments: Tree has historic significance. It grows on the property once owned by Robert Portner who owned a brewing empire and became a millionaire in the late 1800s. Property is his "Annaburg" home, which he designed himself and imported trees from all over the world. Tree was originally nominated as T. americana. Need to verify that this is T. petiolaris and not T. tomentosa. Some authorities regard petiolaris as a sub-species of tomentosa. Update from Greg Zell in 2017: No witnessess were found. Area of large INOVA lot where GPS indicated that tree was located was seached. Six living Tilia sp. were found, but none came close to matching the recorded CBH of the target tree. However, an old depression that appeared to be the remains of a stump was found in immediate area. In addition, there was construction near the site of the stump a few years ago. In my opinion, the target tree is gone.
