2022 Update: Examination of Google Earth revealed that the tree disappeared from aerial photos some time between May 2018 and November 2021. No details are none about the tree's demise, but there was extensive shoreline reconstruction going on near the tree in the May 2018 aerial photo. Former state champion.
2017 Update: Had some die back on one branch which caused it to be cut out recently. Trunk diameter was measured at 4.5' above ground line outside heaving root plate. Dethroned as national champ in 2017.
2007 Update: Tree looks very healthy and has an arborist taking care of it. Measured by Clyde Marsteller at 219"", 110', 103', 355 points.
1994 Update: Has been struck by lightning in the past and now has lightning rod installed. Measured by John David Yoder and Lauren Yoder at 202"", 87', 121', 319 points. Property was purchased in 1897 by J.D. Hertzler from the Young Plantation. According to information taken from Hertzler's diary, he brought with him from his former home in Maryland young trees to plant. This butternut was one of the trees planted at that time.
