Comments: The tree seems healthy, but the crown is much smaller than its trunk base would suggest. I call a cypress of this shape a "turnip tree". This is referred to as the "Carey's Bridge Cypress" because it can be viewed from the bridge on Route 653 (Carey's Bridge Road) that passes over the Nottoway River. The trunk circumference of this tree has fluctuated over the years because the ebb and flow of the river effects the ground level. At the 2016 measurement the points dropped from 610 to 563 due to this effect and bumped it down from state champion.
