Comments:
2022 update: Tree lost height and crown spread due to structural injuries. Tree has suffered the failure of a codominant leader and large scaffold branch sometime in the past 3-5 years. Remaining canopy has abundant, healthy foliage, but these two significant structural injuries will probably lead to tree failure in the next decade as the wood in the wounds decays. This tree was a state champ when first measured, but due to injuries has now dropped in overall rank. Right beneath it stands a painted buckeye (ID#2995) that was noticed during this visit.
2013 update: The tree appears healthy and sound. There is another Shumard (ID#1994) about 550' east of it along the riverbank. Measured by Byron Carmean, Gary Williamson, Joe Whitby, measurements 191", 18', and 98' respectively. 344 points.
