Comments: 2024 comments: Tree continues to thrive. Mr. Outten recently had the tree pruned and cabled to reduce the risk of storm damage or structural failure. Therefore the crown spread has not increased in size. Trunk has a large, heaving root plate. Therefore the ground reference used for trunk girth measurement was situated off the edge of the root plate on unheaved soil at the mid-slope position. The trunk has a peculiar growth habit that suggests it may have formed from several upright stems that fused together long ago.
Prior comments: This is perhaps the most impressive willow oak the nominators have ever seen. The crown spread is unequaled! Field measurements of height, crown spread, and trunk girth in 2014 were 90', 140', and 300". Lidar data from the US Geological Survey in 2017 indicates height of 87' and crown spread of 129'. A measurement of the trunk in February 2023 was recorded as 312".
