Comments:
2025 comments: The tree is alive and well. The multi-stem growth habit is typical for a floodplain tree subjected to recurring severe floods. The current configuration of the tree is likely the result of the original stem being toppled by a flood and several sprouts emerging from the stump. To fairly compare this tree to other silver maples around the state, the composite trunk circumference method was used to calculate the current score. The four main stems measured at 4.5' above ground were 158", 156", 96", and 67". Measurement of the fused trunk at 3' above ground was 288".
2021 comments: This tree has been dethroned as national champion by another tree in Houston County, Minnesota.
2019 comments: Recognized as the national champion in 2019, and then national co-champion in 2020 with two other Virginia specimens, one in Bland county and the other in Bath county.
2015 comments: Originally measured by Robert Vickers at 288" girth, 96' height, 112' crown, and 412 points.
