Comments:
2025 comments: This tree was previously identified and registered as Pinus virginiana. Closer examination of needles and cones in December 2025 clarified the identity as Pinus echinata. The trunk forks into two stems about 3' above ground level. The stems are appressed to one another with bark inclusion up to about 5' above ground level. Origin of double-stemmed growth habit is unknown, but the tree likely suffered damage to its primary leader at an early age, which stimulated regrowth of codominant leaders. Because this growth habit is atypical for the species, each stem was measured separately above the bark inclusion. Stem 1 was 77" and stem 2 was 66". The composite circumference calculated from these two stems is 101", which was used for the scoring in order to provide fair comparison with single-stemmed trees measured at standard height of 4.5'. Trunk measured 3.5' above ground, below the fork, was 107".
2017 comments: Declared national champion in 2017. Dethroned in 2024 by larger trees in Baltimore, MD and Arlington, VA. Very healthy. The tree has a split trunk beginning about 5' above ground. Measured by Bob Vickers as 108", 91', 43', 210 points.
