Comments:
Multi-stem specimen with low sweeping branches. No structural integrity issues. A small treehouse is built in the tree, but doesn't seem to be adversely affecting its health. Branch that treehouse is resting upon has bark lesions with indications of wood borer activity. Canopy is full and healthy. Tree benefits from standing in the shade of a large pecan tree overhead. However the canopy of the pecan is starting to crowd the dogwood. The owner likes the tree and will protect it.
Trunk girth reported here was measured at narrowest point of fused stems near ground line. Each main stem was also measured at 4.5' above ground: stem 1=43", stem 2=48". The basal measurement of the fused stems is appropriate for entry of this tree since that is how other champions of the species have been measured around the state. This tree is almost a carbon copy of the current state champ in Mecklenburg County in terms of growth habit and dimensions.
