Comments:
Healthy specimen with balanced and even crown. Lots of sapsucker feeding on the trunk, but doesn't appear to be affecting vitality of tree. Species identification is uncertain. It doesn't match traits well with any of the well known native and nonnative fir species. A defining characteristic of this tree is that the cone bracts are exserted. This narrows the possibilities considerably. Leading possibilities for the species identification based on cone, bark, form, and needles include: Abies alba, Abies cephalonica, Abies firma, Abies procera, Abies koreana. Ms. Kelly was asked about identity of the tree. Her feedback: "I have no landscape drawings that indicate when the big fir next to the brick walkway was planted or what the exact species is. I do have one drawing of Benton, when the front of the house was on that side. I do not see a tree in that drawing. My guess is that the fir was planted after Mr. Sands made the other side of the house the main entrance."
