2025 comments: This tree seems healthy and sound. It dominates the side yard of this home. Trunk circumference was measured at 2.5' above ground level, below the horizontal branch and above the root collar.
Original construction of the house next to which this tree resides was completed in 1812. Major expansion and renovation to the house occurred in the early 1900s. Given the historical custom of tree planting at the time of home construction, it is likely that this tree was planted at either of those milestones, but there is no direct evidence of the tree's planting date or age. The current owners constructed a three-story, free-standing tree house within the branches of the tree for their children in the 1990s, taking care not to injure the tree. However, the tree house was demolished by a severe storm and fortunately the tree was mostly unscathed.
