Comments:
2021 update: The tree looked to be in declining health with lots of deadwood and a much shorter live crown than previously depicted. It seemed neglected and could use some carep. Seemed to have had a failed cable support system. Trunk circumference was measured at smallest girth between root flare and where branches began (2.2 ft).

This tree lies in bottomland near a spring that feeds into the South Fork of the Roanoke River. It is standing in a pasture field, but is protected by a board fence. Because its base is not visible from any roads, it has gone unnoticed by "big tree searchers" until David Gravell, Landscape Manager, asked for assistance in measuring it.

Tree was previously measured at 183", 60', 96' and 267 points by Alex Darr in 2011.
