2025 comments: Tree continues to thrive. Height taken from Lidar scan in December 2023. Field measurement was 118'. Trunk girth measured at 3' above ground on the uphill side of trunk below low branch.
2017 comments: Measured by Dana Malone at 339" trunk, 108' height, 75' crown, 466 points.
2007 comments: Growing next to a spring on an estate in southern Loudoun County, near the Old Carolina Road. Landowner wishes to remain anonymous. The owner is the fifth generation of his family to nurture the tree since his family founded the farm in the late 1700s. Tree appears to be in very good condition. Open grown, very good soils, and in close proximity to a spring house. Two massive lower limbs by shape and position give this tree an animated appearance.
A quote from the owner: "The tree grows on a spring that my grandfather never saw go dry in his 95 years of life. The tree is believed by many to be at least 450 years old, and perhaps owes its signature double leader shape to some Native American pruning early in its life to denote the sacred spring site (Michael Gaige of GroundTruth has proposed this based on extensive research on similar circumstances along the Mid-Atlantic). The stone house is known as the spring house, where stood an earlier structure that housed the perishable foods in a cold room and glassed beverages such as milk in a cold water trough, a pre-twentieth-century refrigerator, if you will."
