Search the Virginia Big Tree Register
The Virginia Big Tree Register comprises entries for over 2,000 trees that have been documented since the program began in 1970.
Information about eligibility of trees and their ranking in the register can be found here.
Each tree in the register has a status:
- Alive, top 3 in points – a tree that has been verified within the past 10 years as living and currently ranks among the 3 largest specimens of its species based on the measurements taken at that time.
- Alive, not top 3 in points – a tree that has been verified within the past 10 years as living, but currently ranks outside the 3 largest specimens of its species based on the measurements taken at that time.
- Legacy tree – a tree that once ranked among the largest specimens of its species in the state, but has not been measured within the past 10 years and no longer qualifies for active ranking. May re-enter the active rankings if new measurements are taken and reported to the Virginia Big Tree Program.
- Dead tree – a specimen that once ranked among the largest specimens of its species in the state, but is now deceased.
