Comments: Several timber cuttings have been made around this tree, including a high-grading cut in the last decade. The tree was either spared for its aesthetic, shade, or low timber value. Its broad crown extends further and more dense towards the prevailing winds southwest, which can be extremely high. At 2350’ in elevation and on an exposed southern slope, it is subjected to harsh weather, especially in winter, but shows little sign of significant injury.

Surface rocks are abundant and mainly metamorphosed sandstone. Springs are plentiful in the vicinity but this tree grows on the point of a spur with an old graded logging road above it and does not benefit from runoff or near surface ground water.

Nearby tree species are predominantly black locust, tulip poplar, black walnut, American elm, and black cherry. There are two small Virginia pines near it and very few Virginia pines in the surrounding area. Conifer species in the area are mainly white pine growing in groves on more protected terrain. No other table mountain pines have been identified on the property. It is likely that some may be found but sparse, given that the species usually requires significant disturbance to establish seedlings.
